Possible attempt on Nancy Pelosi's life

Man accused of attacking Nancy Pelosi's husband apologizes | AP News
David DePape spoke for more than an hour in which he tearfully recounted about how his political leanings went from leftist to right wing after reading a comment on a YouTube video about former President Donald Trump. He said he bludgeoned Paul Pelosi after realizing his larger plan might be unraveling.

Jurors deliberated for about eight hours before finding David DePape guilty of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. DePape, who faces up to 50 years in prison, did not react as the verdict was read.

...
During his testimony, DePape echoed right-wing conspiracy theories and told jurors he had planned to wear an inflatable unicorn costume and record his interrogation of Nancy Pelosi to upload it online. Prosecutors say he had rope and zip ties with him. Detectives also found body cameras, a computer and a tablet.

DePape testified that his plan was to get Nancy Pelosi to admit that she had been lying to the American people. “If she lied, I would break her kneecaps,” he said. “The choice is on her.”

He said he would then move to other targets, including a women’s and queer studies professor who testified at the trial, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, actor Tom Hanks and President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden.

Meantime, our possible next President uses the attack for laughs at his rallies...and gets them. Wonderful country.
Not possible. Cheato doesn’t know how to “President”. If he manages to steal the coming election and the Country is stupid enough to swear him in as Commander in Chief, Biden will have been America’s last President.

A federal judge on Friday sentenced David DePape to 30 years in prison, six months after a jury found him guilty of attempting to kidnap former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and using a hammer to bludgeon her husband in a bloody October 2022 assault.

30 years? That seems excessive considering it wasn’t actual murder.
Attempted murder? What is that anyway? Do they give a Nobel Prize for Attempted Chemistry?
It's almost like TSwizzle sees justice as a transactional exchange rather than an effort to actually prevent ongoing disruptions to society.

In some ways an attempted murder can indicate more a need to sequester than a successful one, depending on how specific the urge to kill is. If someone wants to kill the person that raped them as a child, and succeeds, it's not apparent that they would necessarily seek to kill anyone else. If they FAIL to kill that person, well, that means that there might be motive to try again, especially given evidence that they are the sort that tried it the first time (not that I actually object to the deaths of child rapists; it's just a hyperbolic example wherein a motive would remain beyond a sentence).

It's the motivation. Similar to why I have such a different attitude towards the January 6 attack and other such violence.
It's an attack on my country. Not just an individual. Throw the book at them.

As much as I despise Lauren Boebert I would have a similar opinion. An assassination attempt motivated by political ideology is in another category from robbery gone bad or lethal domestic violence or any of the other, more common, motivations.

DePape still faces further charges that could see him sentenced to life imprisonment.
DePape is insane, glad he has been given a long sentence but I wonder how this would have played out had his victim been an ordinary citizen and if it had occurred under the jurisdiction of George Gascon in Los Angeles county. Gascon would probably have given him a slap on the wrist.

I've always thought the same thing. The difference between the two often seems random, especially if, say the weapom has missed the heart or major artery by a small fraction of an inch. But, the fact is, the law recognizes that in an attempted murder, the person is still alive, unlike an actual murder. And I guess I would have to reluctantly agree that makes a lot difference.

The difference between what?

What I am saying is that an attack on my country is in a different category from an attack on individuals or groups.

The January 6 attack on the Electoral College is in a different category from a BLM attack on the businesses and people in an urban area, like Ferguson. Because the BLM attack was on a specific group of Americans, the January 6 attack was on my whole country.

Much as I dislike the EC, it's better than rich folks just overthrowing basic institutions because they don't like the outcome of the democratic process!

The difference between attempted murder and murder. I thought that's what you were referring to, and what the discussion was about. I guess I'm all confused now.

It's all very confusing.

I was talking about the distinction between why the crime was committed and not how successful the criminal was at commiting the crime.

It was attempting to destroy my country by assassinating a Congress critter for political ideological reasons.

Much as I don't agree with BLM or "We are Hamas!" protesters, I see them as in a different category of criminals than political assassins. Regardless of their ideology or political leaning, people trying to destroy my country with violence against the government are on my short list.
