Well if this happens, I'm moving back to California and I'm taking one of those houses leaving that homeless person on the street. And what if, and I'm just spitballin' here, but what if there are countless others in the other 49 states thinking the same thing I am?

You might actually do that. And if others hypothetically follow your footsteps the result is a Los Angeles that is even much more densely populated but with affordable homes and shelter. Featuring less homeless people as a percentage of overall population. So the solution still becomes production of more homes and cheaper prices.

Hence, nothing to blame on the Democrats.

Its a little odd, for sure. The Muslim population in CA is not even 1.5%. And we're establishing two state holidays in CA for this tiny minority? The Jewish population is over 3% (which is still small overall, though) and has more holy days that I can remember or keep track of, and they get...nothing. Shows you where the priorities and bias lie.

It certainly has the appearance of anti-Semitism. It would be interesting to see if a bill to have the state recognize a Jewish holiday would make it through the state legislature. If not, that would be the nail in the coffin. I just find it annoying how progressives beat their chest constantly about how bigoted "the other" is and how they stand on the moral high ground, when their words and actions tell a different story.

What our country's constitution forbids is the government favoring one religion over another. It would seem our state government is treading on thin ice by officially recognizing Islam but not Judiasm (and other religions) regarding state recognized holidays.

Okay, I am actually confused. I thought you were arguing that neither Hannukah nor Eid should be recognized. Are you arguing that all of the above holidays should be? If so I agree, and I think nearly all so-called "Progressives" would as well.

Or by recognizing Christianity without recognizing other religions.

IMO, recognizing religion means giving adherents time to observe their religious holidays and rights and accommodations in terms of dress, food options, etc. that do not exclude any minority. So, Catholics can wear crosses if they desire and those whose religion mandates head coverings, modest dress, etc. may wear those items so long as they are able to do so without interfering with function and safety. Doctors and nurses, for example, might wear a long sleeve tshirt under their normally short sleeved scrubs. Women might wear a hair covering. Men might wear beards, even if no facial hair is generally acceptable. Where I live, there are enough Catholics and other Christians that it is common for many schools and workplaces to give a half day for all for Good Friday and sometimes the Monday following Easter, in order to recognize the reality that a large portion of families gather across some distance to celebrate. Generally, tests are scheduled around various religious holidays (not just Christian ones) in that if enough of the population is affected, it is time off for everyone and if only a few are affected, they may have the time off and may take their exams another day.

Where I used to work, there was an annual 'picnic' which was really just ham sandwiches and other typical picnic food served, gratis, during lunch if you chose. Some of us asked why there were no non-pork or vegetarian options for any of the many employees who were Muslim or Jewish or did not eat meat. They did change the food offerings. And then discontinued the practice of annual work picnic during 9-5 work hours......My former employer is quite large and has quite a number of international patients as well as an extremely diverse workforce. Still it is located in the Midwest in an area heavily settled by northern Europeans, mostly of Catholic or Lutheran persuasion. They simply did not think about pork as being proscribed in more than one major religion or eschewed by vegetarians, of which there is a growing number.

My issue is the seeming preference of CA of one religion over the other. Either do both, or none. My preference (by a long shot) is do none. There are too many religions to try to make everyone happy, and our government should stay secular and keep out of the religion business. Maybe we were just talking past each other, but it sounds like we are in agreement here.

As a critique of "Progressivism" then, it makes no sense. I mean, I guess it is your word and you can define it however you like, but I have never certainly never met any I'd consider progressive who hates Channukah, or Yom Kippur, or any other cultural trapping of Judaism. The objection political progressives have to the state of Israel is "colonial violence is bad", not "we hate dreidls".

While antisemitism is rife in American politics, to some extent on both sides of the aisle, so to is love of religious pluralism and acceptance of Judaism and its place in American society and history. Jews themselves vote in diverse and various ways, and neither party has a consistent record on Jewish issues. For decades, blanket support for Israel is widespread, nearly universal, among donkey politicians and elephant politicians alike. Attempts to materially support Jewish people, take meaningful or concrete action to combat anti-Semitic organizations, or culturally embrace Hebrew language and customs into American life havw usually met a tepid response from politicians of all parties, if not a hostile one.

And as pretty much any American Jew will tell you, when Jewish people needed American support the most, in all of our shared history, we closed our borders and sighed sorrowfully, doing NOTHING, as the Nazis slaughtered their kin overseas. That wicked deed was not the work of "Progressives" by any plausible definition of that term. Republicans, then the awkward host party of Progressivism much in the same way Democrats are today, were mercilessly silent when the issue tried to come home to our shores.

As for whether "all" or "none" are a better option, I personally would be fine with either, but if it is "none" then it needs to be a true none. If it is supposedly because of religious freedom and the Constitutional protections thereof that various religious holidays of Pagan faiths must not be recognized, then Christmas and Thanksgiving have also got to go. Since the odds of that happening are somewhere between 0 and -100 (US conservatives already think there is a "war on Christmas" and waste millions of dollars trying to fight said war in commerce, charity, society, and law) I do not support banning other religions from having their holidays likewise recognized. If they think they can attract the votes necessary to do so, there's no reason they shouldn't try. The current situation, in which Christianity is the only faith routinely endorsed and invoked by the state, is not coherent with our supposed values of freedom of religion and governmental non-partisanship.
