The destruction of the Olympics by Christians

Here's another "fun" fact/ironies of history I've learned here. In 100 bc Spain was full of gold and silver mines. And recently conquered and turned into a Roman colony. The way the Spanish treated the indigenous Americans was how the Romans treated the Iberians 100 bc. The irony
Hurt people, hurt people. Every new regime promises liberation from the ravages of the previous, then inherits their institutions and deploys the same methods they did. Columbus certainly would not be offended by any comparison of himself to the Roman heroes of old. "Rome" (Constantinople) fell to Ottomans when he was a child, causing a panic in Europe and a sudden burst of nostalgia in her popular culture. Allusions to the Caesars and the writers of yore were everywhere for a while.

The most amazing thing about Pompeii is the streets. It all feels just like a normal Roman day. And it just goes on and on. In any other setting each house would lead to its own museum. Its a whole city of it. Pretty mindblowing
True story. My mother visited Pompeii in the 50’s. They would not let her see the brothel. It was considered too scandalous for a woman to see.
