What Are You Eating Today?

I've eaten there, but it has certainly been a while. I once met a British colleague at the McDonald's in Christchurch NZ after a conference. I went along with it, but thought it odd enough to inquire as to WHY we were lunching at a Macca's of all places. He gets this impish grin on his face and says "Well we wanted you to feel at home, didn't we?"

Oh, right, the topic. I'm eating pretty well today, as the Asian market near my place has been filling up with the spring bounty. I was simmering some lotus root in broth yesterday afternoon, they became part of an oniony soup for dinner yesterday, and a very garlicky stir fry for today's lunch. Picked up a precooked eel for dinner, the plan is to do a vaguely Japanese style unagi don with it.

My lateshifts are two weeks out of every six, and I have a particular lateshift eating pattern to avoid being hungry at work.

Lates are typically 3pm-midnight (though the exact times vary quite a bit), with a mealbreak at around 7-8pm. I don't like to eat much at that time of day, so I generally have just one big meal before I start work (I try to stay in bed most of the morning).

My 'big meal' is a large bowl of brown rice (250g) and tuna (370g), with a sauce made up of yoghurt (three tablespoons) and sour cream (half a tablespoon) with a teaspoon of hot English mustard mixed through it.

That is often the only food I eat all day on lates, but if I am hungry when I get home I have a bowl of breakfast cereal or some toast and vegemite before bed.

I eat real food the other four weeks out of six, when I am working sane hours (typically 6am-3pm, with lunch around 10:30am).

Shiftwork sucks, but the pay's good.

My dietitian wants me to eat more protein. I’ve never been a big breakfast person but I’m trialling eating a low carb, high protein bread for breakfast with Vegemite or scrambled eggs, and a bowl of protein enhanced granola with dried fruit and milk. Lunch is becoming some meat in a protein enhanced wrap with cucumber, tomato, capsicum and lettuce, with some hummus or similar as ‘butter’. Dinner will be whatever I make, though while Bilby is on lates this could be a frozen dinner or just a snack.

I have been doing something right though, I’ve lost 15kg in 15 months. It’s been a slow and steady weight loss.

Protein is why one of my regular breakfasts is eggs with rice and beans.

Eggs are a complete protein, and the rice beans combo are a complete protein. Milk and cheese.

Rice and most bans are a good protein combo. Rice and lentils arr good, rice and green peas.

Plenty of info on complete proteins and food combos on the net.

Some foods like bread can have all essential proteins, but not all in sufficient quantity.
Canned tuna and salmon. Fish, chicken. Whole grain bread and peanut butter are a good combo.

Cashews, peanuts.

Find your daily protein requirement. Then set up a spreadsheet to add up protein for what you eat.

Leaned something new.

Vegemite is a dark brown, salty, and savory Australian food spread made from leftover brewer's yeast extract, with vegetable and spice additives, and is a rich source of B vitamins. It's an iconic national food, typically eaten in small amounts, lightly spread on buttered toast or crackers, and has a strong, umami flavor that is an acquired taste.

Too0 much unison for me.

Here's an image for you.

In his book The Naked Island, Russell Braddon (good author BTW) describes a man very swollen with beriberi. He dickers for a small jar of Vegemite and turns into a small fountain for an extended time.

My best friend was prescribed half teaspoon of Vegemite when she was running low on nutrition.

It should be classed as a superfood!

FFS you don’t need it on toast, it’s a great meat tenderiser and additive to stews!
